I had no idea this Saturday night was going to become a final night out before COVID-19 pushed us all indoors. We met friends for dinner, and despite it being a very cold evening, I felt the urge to try to some night photography. I had watched some videos about finding sources of light from business windows and signs. Newbury Street in Boston is a great commercial area, and happened to be the location of our dinner reservation. With a scarf, hat and gloves, I headed out into the cold.
I found twinkle lights wrapped around trees, but I was most drawn to the steam wafting through the headlights of traffic. I would have never thought to seek out car headlights, but the way the lit up and yet were diffused by the steam was quite compelling. I squatted down for a few shots. I also came across a new business opening party that featured an unexpected string quartet in the window. Because of the chill in the air, I found quite a few restaurant and cafe scenes with fogged windows.
Once at the restaurant, there was plenty of wine to warm me back up… well worth braving the cold to challenge myself and practice some photography techniques for an hour or so. I even stumbled upon a new restaurant that I hope to try once the shelter in place and social distancing are behind us.
