While last year’s Fourth of July weekend was spent at the Montreal Jazz Festival, this year was spent in my own backyard. Living in a city apartment means I do not actually have my own backyard, but there are plenty available that I can borrow. The
Arnold Arboretum was designed by
Frederick Law Olmsted and located in Jamaica Plain. That’s a simple ride on the Orange Line, so we decided to spend a beautiful (and warm) Sunday there with friends. Its two hundred and eighty one acres was plenty of “backyard” for me that day.
Inspired by the inland sailing we sat and watched on Jamaica Pond, we headed to the harbor for some sparkling rosé and fried seafood snacks. The sun was setting and people were out and about on Fan Pier. A line of photographers was setup with tripods awaiting some beautiful shots of the Boston skyline at dusk. I found a couple who sat by the water taking a collective memory moment, opting to remember the skyline instead of photographing it.
