I typically shoot with a 50mm prime lens. I find it forces me to “human zoom” walking into and out of a scene to get the shot I want. I like that I need to get more physical with my surroundings. For a summer weekend at the beach, I decided to play a bit with a lens that has an extremely wide range … the opposite of my usual setup. I rented aย Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS E Mount.
This lens was lots of fun. I was able to use the long zoom to capture some vintage-looking surfer pictures from the comfort of my beach chair. Much less invasive than standing on the shoreline, or even in the water, staring down the barrel of a camera while these guys did their thing.
The wide angle was also quite nice for capturing the action of a wiffle ball game on the dry sand by the dunes.
To see this lens at its opposite extremes, the last two photos above were taken one after the other, looking straight down Washington Street in Boston’s Downtown Crossing. Notice not only how much more readable the Paramount Theater sign is, but also the ability to see people standing on the rooftop next door.
